Unplanned & Unbudgeted Auto Repair

DRAT!

Recently our 2002 Impala with 135,000ish miles took a long route into the ditch. We had to summon a wrecker as our truck could not get enough traction to pull the car out. The wrecker had a hard time as well, the car was stuck good and the road was slick. The wrecker at first was pulling itself into the ditch!

Eventually, Brandon from John’s Towing got the car out. However, things were immediately noticeably wrong with the car.

A Car Repair YOU Can Do!

Many of us believe automotive repair to be too difficult to take on ourselves, and truth is some repairs are very much for the professional. While I have participated in some extensive repairs (changing a head gasket) some repairs require specialized tools not worth purchasing and knowledge to pull off.

However, some repairs are well within the realm of the non-professional. Changing the oil is one such repair, but I outsource that due to the hassle of oil disposal.

Brake repairs are one item most people should be able to do on their own, in fact in the last couple of months I have done two separate break repair jobs.

Thowing Away the Keys

Yesterday, Lorie and I went to a nearby strip mall so I could get my haircut. Unfortunately, the haircut place was closed. We parked next to a small Toyota SUV that was fairly new.

The Toyota had an orange tag on the window notifying the owner to get their vehicle by May 17 or it would be considered an abandoned vehicle. Odd, most of the time I see those tags on cars alongside the highway.

Anyway I did get into the haircut place today. I inquired with the woman cutting my hair about it and she noted the owner parked it, walked into the neighboring Wells Fargo Finance Office and left the keys with them. Apparently, the owner decided they could no longer afford to pay on it.

Of course, one wonders what the situation was. Did someone take on too much of a car payment? Did they lose a job? Become disabled? Break a mirror and you get seven years of bad luck, well dude’s (or dudette’s) is in for seven years of bad credit.

I bet they were upside down on the vehicle, otherwise why handle it like that?

Frugal Driving Habits

One expense growing for all of us is obviously gasoline. There are driving habits that can help you squeeze out more miles per gallon. I do not see a whole lot of people taking on those habits either. Perhaps gasoline is not that expensive? (more…)

An Example of Cheapness

Some years ago a good buddy of mine had a diesel pickup truck. When he purchased the truck it already had a large number of miles on it.

Sometime after he purchased it (from a private party) the truck’s glow-plug controller burned out. Now, the glow-plug controller was essential to starting the truck. However, instead of buy a replacement for whatever they cost the person bought two small screwdrivers and a wire with alligator clips. The screwdrivers were attached to each other with the alligator clips and the driver or companion would manually opening the truck hood and making the needed connection.

A great savings to be sure. Instead of spending the couple of hundred dollars to replace the controller a maximum of $5.00 was spent to set up the manual glow plug control.

However, my buddy started to spend money on replacing – (yeap you guessed it) burned out glow plugs. In addition, we were once stuck in the deer woods on a cold ad blowing night without light trying to figure out where to stick the leads.

Eventually, another solution was found and that was to set up a toggle switch to glow the plugs but the expense of replacing burned out glow plugs continued.

I deem not replacing the glow-plug controller cheap. How about you? Vote & discuss!
