Coins in the hand on New Year's Day!
There are two Filipino New Year’s Day customs I treasure and am eager to participate in. The first one consists of making sure you have coins in your pocket as the year turns over.
In my hand is some of the pocket change I carried over from 2008 to 2009 and at the moment the year turned over I shook my pockets making sure the change jangled. The idea is to increase what you have at the start.

If I have given you the impression I like to cook, that is good, because I do like to cook. This is pizza III in my current pizza pie cooking kick. This, in my opinion, is my best pizza effort EVER.
BTW, I consider YAPPie Place and similar derivations (e.g. Yappie’s Place) as my intellectual property. (more…)

Being frugal is about more than just saving money. To me, being frugal is about using your resources wisely and being more efficient with everything you do. Unless you are independently wealthy, you probably have a limited amount of time, money, and other resources - and you probably need to find a way to make the most effective use of all of them. To me, doing this is being frugal.
So Says Patrick at Cash Money Life in a blog entitled Being Frugal
I have taken on this topic before:
In this category frugal is a good thing. It means avoiding waste mainly avoiding the wastage of wealth.
If I deem something frugal, then if appropriate for your situation you should buy or utilize it.
Patrick expands on the meaning of frugal and while I believe he is incorrect about the meaning of frugal, giving it a broader meaning beyond the word’s ability, he is correct the characteristics he describes are connected to being frugal.

The other ad that actually constantly plays during the football games I’ve been watching on TV recently is for Free Credit Report dot com. First off, if you want a free credit report go to annualcreditreport.com not “free” credit report because the “free” site is not really free. You have to sign up for a free trial of a service and if you don’t cancel it, you pay. But, anyway. The commercial (and some of you have probably seen it) is a guy singing about how he married the love of his life, but her credit stinks and so they have to live in a parent’s basement instead of buying a house, and if he’d gone to the website, he’d have known and not married her and he’d be a happy bachelor. [emphasis in original]

I am mostly in agreement with above…

Giftgiving can often be a decidedly unfrugal event. It should not be so, especially for those close to us.It need not always be so.

Our washing machine during its last use made inordinate amounts of noise in the spin cycle and Lorie noted the drum did not turn like it should, sure enough there was a problem.Well, some googling and my limited knowledge of mechanical things led me to believe a bearing went bad. Well, today that was pretty much confirmed.

There is the old saying, watch the pennies and the pounds will take care of themselves. However, we have another saying contradicting the previous one: penny-wise, but pound-foolish, that is one who is very conscious on the small expenditures but foolishes handles large sums of money. I tend to think the former (think
Former
First,
Later
Last). saying carries more weight and the later is used to justify not watching one’s daily expenditures.

Free Money Finance beats me to the punch and discusses grocery shopping on a budget. I have been kicking this around but have not yet written it. Free Money Finance notes an interesting statistic about shopping, that is on average, people purchase about $100.00 of goods per hour when in a grocery store. Well this makes sense, most often we do not just hang out in stores. In addition to keeping you in the stores, marketers work to stimulate your buying through the use of colors, product placement, product pricing, display design, etc.Since I have worked in retail I know retail stores do spend a fair amount of resources in designing their stores to get you to buy. Here are the things I have heard or am coming to see as good ways to minimize grocery expenses.

Cash Money Life asks: What Temperature Do You Set Your Thermostat? Here is my answer. You are looking at three money saving tactical weapons! From left: a wool quilt (yes, in camouflage), a wool rag sweater, and flannel bed sheets. I particularly like the green & gold color theme, GO PACK GO!
Anyway some years ago in our local newspaper there was a letter to the editor complaint about the cost of heating their house!
