You are correct as I do have threads on the topic -- that of home appliance repair.

I would start by searching on the Internet - use google and fill in the brand, name & model # of your dishwasher. Then read those links and see what problems are common, what it takes to fix them, and the likely causes. If you decide to move forward then get some help and start to tear the machine apart.

Can you see the source of the leak? Is it the machine itself or the plumbing? Without knowing more, my guess is replacing a gasket somewhere is what you need.

A repair visit is likely going to cost you $70.00 or for the repair tech just to walk in your door, and my guess is they will in the end tell you the cost to fix the problem will be about the same as buying a new model.

This is a very good site: http://fixitnow.com/ for appliance repair.

It seems New Year's customs for luck are focused mostly on money. In the Greek tradition, we make black-eyed peas on New Year's Day for general luck, but we also boil cabbage specifically for financial luck. Very interesting about the coins and the 13 round fruits!

Erm, this may not be the most appropriate thread for this question, but I'm going to go ahead and ask it: Do you have any advice about replacing versus repairing a dishwashwer? Mine is 10 years old, has non-working control buttons, and has begun to leak big-time. I didn't worry too much about the control buttons, since I don't use them, but I cannot now use the dishwasher as it floods my kitchen.

What do you think? Should I pay for a repair visit hoping the machine is still useable, or just spring for a new one?

Lulu B,

Thanks for the pointer on that, I'll have to give it a try myself. I do just what you suggest with steaks, I sear 'em in a pan with some olive oil and add onion, mushrooms, and wine to the pan while the steaks go to the grill for finishing, very good!

I would imagine it only adds about another 15-20 minutes to the prep, huh?

I'll be adding more recipes too. I find a very good way to extend one's cash and eat good is to make bean/pea soups.

Thanks for reading & commenting!

It's nice to see a non-foodie site with a good recipe! One thing you can do to pump up the flavor without having to buy anything extra is to sear the beef chunks in a skillet till well-browned on all sides before tossing them in the slow cooker. Then you pour your broth/stock in the skillet and scrape up all the tasty brown gunk before dumping the broth and gunk into the slow cooker. If you don't have any broth/stock, the brown gunk will go a long way towards remedying this deficiency. Someday they'll make slow cookers that have stove-top proof inserts so you can do all this without an extra pan to clean...

Anyway, nice blog, keep up the good work!
