Frugal vs. Miserly
More than a few people may believe frugal and miserly are synonyms. However, it is my considered opinion there is a vast difference between the two.
Being frugal is being wise and being a miser is actually loving money in and of itself, not what it can get you, but money itself. Remember, money is nothing more than a stand in for the material things we need and want. If that paper with George Washington’s picture on it was just a picture you would not be concerned with getting so many!
No, being frugal is not about loving money or even the things it can get you, being frugal is wisely managing your money and possessions.
Being frugal does not mean living an aesthetic lifestyle it means wisely prioritizing the material things in your life. Homeless bums do not spend a whole lot, but they are not frugal because they do not (or are not capable of) wisely prioritize the needs and wants in their life. If you have your needs taken care of then you can proceed to the wants of your life. If you want and can do so, buy a $100 bottle of cognac.
A man once called Clark Howard and was talking about a TV purchase. You could sense the man was calling Clark to be talked out of the purchase. Clark asked the man a set of questions making sure the man was not financing the purchase or that the man was not neglecting saving. Every question Clark asked the man responded in a very positive fashion. Clark then told the man to go and buy and enjoy the TV.
It is important we do not let our material desires enslave us, but never starve yourself either. The starved man in front of a banquet table may overindulge and get sick.
Trying to change myself and you on thrift and savings! It is hard to save save save in a spend spend spend world, but it is better to save than spend!
